The Business of Everyday Life!

Over the past few weeks, we have observed a wonderful shift in the children’s dramatic play. Inspired by the arrival of spring and their close observations of their parents & weekend routines, the classroom has transformed into a bustling hub of community life!

The children have been deeply engaged in role-playing everyday tasks, bringing the adult world down to their level:

The Laundromat: We saw incredible focus as the children loaded the washing machine and carefully hung clothes to dry. Squeezing the clothespins was not just fun—it provided an excellent heavy work & exercise for their thumbs and fingers, strengthening the fine motor muscles essential for future writing.

The Restaurant & Hair Salon: Social scripts came alive as the children treated each other to pampering sessions at the salon and took turns acting as servers and customers at our takeaway restaurant. They practiced negotiating roles, offering various food and drink choices, and sharing the space cooperatively.

The Garden Shop: Most recently, with the snow finally melting, the children opened their very own garden centre! Influenced by trips to the store with their families, they are exploring the changing season and role-playing what it takes to prepare a garden for spring.

While it looks like simple pretend play, this is how children make sense of the world around them. By mimicking your daily routines, they are developing crucial social-emotional skills (like taking turns and empathy), practicing expressive language, and building their executive functioning as they plan out their play scenarios.
